I was commissioned into the Indian Army in 1968. Over the next four decades I held a range of appointments, in the field and on staff, and rose through the ranks to command.

Much of that time was spent away from home, in difficult terrain. The habits those years taught me — preparation, patience, and composure under pressure — stayed with me throughout my service.

1968-ൽ ഞാൻ ഇന്ത്യൻ ആർമിയിൽ കമ്മീഷൻ ലഭിച്ചു. തുടർന്നുള്ള നാല് പതിറ്റാണ്ടുകളിൽ ഫീൽഡിലും സ്റ്റാഫിലുമായി വിവിധ നിയമനങ്ങൾ വഹിച്ച്, ക്രമേണ കമാൻഡ് സ്ഥാനത്തേക്ക് ഉയർന്നു.

ആ കാലത്തിന്റെ ഏറെയും വീട്ടിൽ നിന്ന് അകന്ന്, ദുഷ്കരമായ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലായിരുന്നു. ആ വർഷങ്ങൾ പഠിപ്പിച്ച ശീലങ്ങൾ — മുന്നൊരുക്കം, ക്ഷമ, ബഹളത്തിനിടയിലും മനസ്സ് കൈവിടാതിരിക്കൽ — സേവനകാലം മുഴുവൻ എന്നോടൊപ്പമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

In the summer of 1999, Pakistani troops crossed the Line of Control into the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir. I was then commanding a field artillery regiment.

I was the first commanding officer to be inducted into the Kargil sector for Operation Vijay. My regiment's guns were in support at Tololing and Tiger Hill, where our infantry took back positions the enemy held at very high altitude.

For the assault on Point 4875 I prepared the fire plan myself and ran it from an anchor observation post that lay in the enemy's direct view. We worked there under small-arms, mortar and artillery fire. The plan held, and the position was taken. I have never regarded any of it as my achievement alone.

1999-ലെ വേനൽക്കാലത്ത് പാകിസ്ഥാൻ സൈന്യം നിയന്ത്രണ രേഖ കടന്ന് ജമ്മു കശ്മീരിലെ കാർഗിൽ സെക്ടറിലേക്ക് നുഴഞ്ഞുകയറി. അന്ന് ഞാൻ ഒരു ഫീൽഡ് ആർട്ടിലറി റെജിമെന്റിനെ നയിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.

ഓപ്പറേഷൻ വിജയിനായി കാർഗിൽ സെക്ടറിലേക്ക് നിയോഗിക്കപ്പെട്ട ആദ്യ കമാൻഡിംഗ് ഓഫീസർ ഞാനായിരുന്നു. വളരെ ഉയരത്തിൽ ശത്രു കൈവശപ്പെടുത്തിയിരുന്ന സ്ഥാനങ്ങൾ നമ്മുടെ കാലാൾപ്പട ടോളോലിംഗിലും ടൈഗർ ഹില്ലിലും തിരിച്ചുപിടിച്ചപ്പോൾ എന്റെ റെജിമെന്റിന്റെ പീരങ്കികൾ പിന്തുണയിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

പോയിന്റ് 4875-ന്റെ ആക്രമണത്തിന് ഫയർ പ്ലാൻ ഞാൻ തന്നെ തയ്യാറാക്കി, ശത്രുവിന്റെ നേർക്കാഴ്ചയിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഒരു ആങ്കർ ഒബ്സർവേഷൻ പോസ്റ്റിൽ നിന്ന് അത് നടപ്പാക്കി. ചെറുആയുധങ്ങളുടെയും മോർട്ടാർ, പീരങ്കി വെടിവയ്പ്പിന്റെയും ഇടയിലായിരുന്നു ഞങ്ങൾ അവിടെ പ്രവർത്തിച്ചത്. പദ്ധതി പിഴച്ചില്ല; ആ സ്ഥാനം പിടിച്ചെടുത്തു. ഇതൊന്നും എന്റെ മാത്രം നേട്ടമായി ഞാൻ ഒരിക്കലും കരുതിയിട്ടില്ല.

I retired from the Army in 2008 and spent the next eight years in Delhi, working in the corporate sector as an executive director.

In 2016 I retired fully to my hometown of Chavakkad, in the Thrissur district of Kerala.

2008-ൽ ഞാൻ ആർമിയിൽ നിന്ന് വിരമിച്ചു; തുടർന്നുള്ള എട്ട് വർഷം ഡൽഹിയിൽ കോർപ്പറേറ്റ് മേഖലയിൽ എക്‌സിക്യൂട്ടീവ് ഡയറക്ടറായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു.

2016-ൽ പൂർണമായി വിരമിച്ച് സ്വദേശമായ കേരളത്തിലെ തൃശ്ശൂർ ജില്ലയിലെ ചാവക്കാട്ട് സ്ഥിരതാമസമാക്കി.
